Why Fire Warden Training Isn't Just a Good Idea, It's the Law in Australia

The regulations are pretty clear in Australia: fire warden training isn't a nice to have, it's officially a must under AS 3745-2010. That means if you're running a high-rise building, hospital, school or industrial site you've got to get on board - and quick. The consequences of not doing so are pretty severe:

  • Fines for anyone who ignores these rules.
  • Potential legal liability in the event of an emergency.
  • You could even see your business insurance fall through a hole in the ground if the worst happens.

How Many Fire Wardens Should You Have On Your Team?

As a general rule you'll need one fire warden for every 20 people on site, but that can change depending on the size of your workplace and the level of risk involved. The fire warden training will vary.

What's Covered in Fire Warden Training?

Our fire warden training courses are designed to give your team the skills they need to think on their feet in an emergency. We cover all the key areas including:

  • Fire Safety Procedures: We'll give your team a solid grounding in what to do to stop a fire starting in the first place, how to use the right kind of equipment, and what to do in an emergency situation.
  • Evacuation Planning: We'll show your team how to plan for getting everybody out safely, which is just as important as getting them out in the first place.
  • Using Emergency Equipment: We'll get hands-on with fire extinguishers and other safety gear so your team know exactly how to use them if they need to.
  • Human Behaviour in Workplace Emergencies: We'll give your team a crash course in how to keep everyone calm in the face of danger, and what to do when the pressure is on.

We know that one size doesn't fit all, which is why we've got a range of training options to suit your team's needs. Whether you're a small business or a large industrial site, we've got a course to suit - from online training to in-person sessions.

Dealing with Difficult Evacuations: Our Trained Fire Warden's Field Guide

Getting People to Evacuate Who Don't Want To

One of the toughest parts of the job is getting some people to evacuate. They might be panicking, in denial of the danger, or just plain refusing to leave. Fire wardens need to:

  • Stay calm and assertive - no matter what's going on.
  • Politely but firmly ask people to leave, reminding them of the risks and what's at stake.

AS 3745 tells us we should be refreshing fire warden training every couple of years, ideally two years. Wish I could tell you that conducting fire drills is a magic bullet that makes skills magically sharper every six months - but any fire warden will tell you they keep your team on their toes six times a year, just to be sure they're prepared.

How Well Do Fire Wardens Really Do?

Research from the NFPA shows that with good fire wardens, sprinklers and smoke detectors, you can almost wipe out injuries and fatalities. The ones who get the training and drills are always ready though - and that's great news.

Fire Warden Training FAQ

Do I really have to have fire wardens in my workplace?

Well yes you do - especially in high-rises, hospitals and schools - that's what AS 3745-2010 says.

How long will this fire warden training course take?

You can get through an online fire warden course in about two to three hours... but an in-person course will take more like six to eight hours.

How often should we be doing fire warden training?

You should probably refresh it every couple of years, but fire drills and the odd refresher course every six months will have your team doing ok.

What if we can't get enough fire wardens?

Don't get enough, and you'll get hit with fines and a lot of hassle with your insurance company. The rule of thumb is one fire warden per twenty people in the building.
