Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a Fire Warden (PUAFER005) and Chief Fire Warden (PUAFER006)?

PUAFER005 is designed for fire wardens who need to operate as part of an emergency control organisation. It covers key warden duties such as responding to emergencies, assisting with evacuation procedures, communicating with occupants and following workplace emergency plans.

PUAFER006 is for chief fire wardens who take on a leadership role during an emergency. It focuses on coordinating the emergency control organisation, making decisions, managing communication and helping control the overall workplace response.

Do I need to be a Fire Warden to use a fire extinguisher at work?

No, you do not always need to be a fire warden to learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Fire extinguisher training is useful for many staff members, especially those working in environments where fire risks are present.

However, employees should only use firefighting equipment if it is safe to do so and they have been trained in the correct procedures. In an emergency, personal safety and evacuation should always come first.

How long is fire safety training certification valid for?

Fire safety training certificates do not always have a fixed expiry date, but many workplaces refresh fire warden and fire extinguisher training regularly to keep staff confident and compliant with workplace procedures.

As a general guide, many businesses choose refresher training every 12 months, or sooner if there are changes to staff, building layout, emergency plans or workplace risks.

Can fire warden and fire extinguisher training be completed on the same day?

Yes, fire warden and fire extinguisher training can often be completed on the same day, depending on the course structure and workplace requirements.

Combining both types of training can be a practical option for businesses that want staff to understand emergency roles, evacuation procedures and the safe use of portable fire equipment in one session.

What's included in the practical fire extinguisher training component?

The practical fire extinguisher training component usually covers how to identify different classes of fire, select the correct extinguisher and use firefighting equipment safely.

Participants may practise the correct technique for using a fire extinguisher and learn when it is appropriate to attempt to control a small fire. The training also reinforces when to stop, evacuate and wait for emergency services.

Is fire safety training required by law for all workplaces?

Workplaces have a duty to manage health and safety risks, including emergency situations such as fire. This means employers must have suitable emergency plans, procedures and trained staff where required for their workplace.

The level of fire safety training needed can depend on the size of the workplace, the type of work being carried out, the building, the risks present and any industry-specific requirements.

What's the difference between the healthcare fire safety course set and general fire safety training?

General fire safety training is designed for a broad range of workplaces and usually focuses on emergency procedures, evacuation, fire warden duties and the safe use of firefighting equipment.

A healthcare fire safety course set is tailored to healthcare and care environments, where staff may need to consider patients, residents, mobility limitations, medical equipment and more complex evacuation needs. It is suited to workers in settings such as hospitals, aged care, disability support and other health-related workplaces.
