Why Is Having an Emergency Procedures Manual Important?

An Emergency Plan including Emergency Response Procedures for your workplace  must be developed and maintained for each facility to ensure compliance with Australian Standard 3745-2010 Planning for emergencies and facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Emergency Procedures Manual a legal requirement for Australian businesses?

Australian businesses are generally required to manage workplace health and safety risks, which includes having suitable emergency procedures for incidents such as fire, medical emergencies, chemical spills or evacuations.

The exact documentation required can depend on the workplace, industry, building type and level of risk. Many organisations use an Emergency Procedures Manual to help meet these obligations and clearly outline emergency response processes.

How often does an Emergency Management Plan need to be reviewed and updated?

Emergency Management Plans should be reviewed regularly to ensure they remain accurate and effective. Many workplaces review plans annually, after an emergency incident, after drills, or when significant workplace changes occur.

Changes such as new layouts, staffing, hazards, equipment or tenancy arrangements can all trigger the need for an update.

What's the difference between an Emergency Management Plan and an evacuation diagram?

An Emergency Management Plan is a broader document that outlines how a workplace prepares for, responds to and recovers from emergencies. It may include roles and responsibilities, communication procedures, training requirements and response actions.

An evacuation diagram is a visual map that shows exits, assembly areas, firefighting equipment and key emergency information to help occupants evacuate safely.

Do you conduct site visits to assess our workplace before creating the plan?

Yes, site visits can often be arranged to better understand your workplace layout, hazards, occupancy levels and emergency requirements before preparing a customised plan.

This helps ensure the final document is practical, relevant and aligned to how your site actually operates.

Can you develop Emergency Management Plans for multiple sites or locations?

Yes, Emergency Management Plans can be developed for businesses operating across multiple sites or locations. Each site may require its own plan based on layout, risks, staffing levels and local procedures.

Optimum Training can help create a consistent framework while tailoring details for each workplace.

What is a PEEP (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) and when is it required?

A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is an individual plan designed to help a person evacuate safely during an emergency if they may need additional assistance.

PEEPs are commonly considered for workers, visitors or occupants with mobility limitations, medical conditions, sensory impairments or other factors that could affect evacuation.

How long does it take to develop a customised Emergency Management Plan?

Timeframes can vary depending on the size of the workplace, complexity of the site, number of locations and whether site inspections are required.

Smaller sites may be completed relatively quickly, while larger or higher-risk workplaces can require more detailed planning and consultation.
